What is CCTV?

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is commonly known as video surveillance. It refers to the use of video cameras that transmit a signal to a place with monitors. It sends the images point-to-point (P2P) quite commonly. However, there is more of a tendency to also allow the footage to be shared wirelessly to smartphones and other destinations.

What is CCTV?

Why CCTV?

It is used where surveillance is needed in areas needing more security or ongoing monitoring. It would be commonly used in commercial situations such as offices, warehouses, and factories where theft or intruders could be a threat. CCTV is popular in public spaces such as shopping centres, busy pedestrian streets and even on public transport. This is to protect members of the public and to monitor and record any anti-social behaviour. The inclusion of security cameras in the home to protect homeowners and property has almost become the norm now.

Video Footage

The footage from these cameras is shared in real time to a monitoring centre either on the premises or in a control room based centrally. It will also be recorded and stored securely, normally in the cloud. This would be in case it is needed later to support a query, legal case or help with an investigation. Some of this footage may need to be redacted before sharing to comply with data protection legislation.

The quality of the recordings can vary depending on equipment and newer cameras will supply nighttime footage to the same quality as daylight hours. Other cameras are not operating 24 hours a day but are triggered by motion. Commercially many CCTV systems are incorporated with access control for a tighter security solution.

Benefits of CCTV

Security cameras are used for crime prevention, they are a deterrent to the would-be intruder who does not want to risk being seen. The footage helps to solve crimes, from tracing missing persons to monitoring somebody’s movements. In the busy world we all live in, CCTV is being used to increase safety in public places by reducing anti-social behaviour and theft. A great tool in the fight against crime and the process of keeping people, product and premises safer.
